British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper is expected to arrive in China for a three-day visit to participate in the 11th China-UK Strategic Dialogue, reports Anadolu. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China announced that Secretary Cooper is making the visit at the invitation of her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, and will stay in China until June 3. The visit comes a few months after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s historic trip to China earlier this year, which marked the first such visit since 2018.
According to Chinese experts, the Global Times reports, Secretary Cooper’s visit reflects the UK’s desire to maintain communication channels with major powers such as China in a period of growing global uncertainty, as well as to advance the results of Starmer’s visit.
United Kingdom was the first major Western country to recognize China in 1950, while in May 2004 the two sides raised the relationship to the level of a “comprehensive strategic partnership”.
With an annual bilateral trade volume of 98.36 billion dollars in 2024, the two countries have also established high-level exchange mechanisms, including the Annual Meeting of Prime Ministers, the Economic and Financial Dialogue, the Strategic Dialogue and High Level Dialogue Between Peoples.
