The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney stated that they will not respond to every post on the social networks of US President Donald Trump, who described Canada as the “51st country” and stressed that they should continue cooperation with the Trump administration, reports Anadolu.
Carney made a statement to reporters at the press conference in the city of Longueuil, Quebec (Quebec).
Remembering Trump’s description of Canada as the “51st country” and US Ambassador to Ottawa Pete Hoekstra shared this post on social media, a reporter asked whether or not the ambassador should leave the country.
Answering “no” to that question, Carney said: “This is an administration we have to work with. It’s our largest trading partner, our most important security partner, and we have relationships in many other areas. We work with that administration. We accept the administration as it is,” he said.
Carney stressed that Canadian officials continue to meet with their American counterparts on important issues, including trade, and noted that Canada’s minister responsible for trade with the U.S., Dominic LeBlanc, and chief negotiator Janice Charette have been in contact with the U.S. administration in Washington on trade relations.
Canadian Prime Minister Carney was also asked whether he has influenced the talks. trade between Canada and the US, the fact that President Trump refers to Canada as the “51st state of the United States”.
Saying that Trump uses social media actively and that this frequency has increased in recent months, Carney said: “We are not going to respond or react to everything he shares (posts)”.
