The government of Mexico announced on Sunday that the long-time leader of the New Generation Cartel of Jalisco, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the country, has been killed.
It is Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known by the nickname “El Mencho”, who was considered one of the most violent figures of organized crime in Mexico. He led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) for years, turning it into one of the region’s dominant drug-trafficking groups.
Under his command, the cartel expanded rapidly over the past decade, building a reputation for open attacks on security forces and terrorizing communities in several Mexican states. CJNG was involved in the trafficking of synthetic drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine and, in recent years, fentanyl to the United States.
Authorities warn that the elimination of “El Mencho” is a significant blow to the cartel.
