England dominates Europe: the Premier League guarantees five clubs in the Champions League, fierce competition for the fifth place

Wednesday, April 8th 2026

The Premier League will have at least five teams in the Champions League next season, having secured an extra place through European Performance (EPS) for the second year in a row.

The extra place was sealed after Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Sporting CP in the first leg of the quarter-finals, a result that further strengthened England’s position in the UEFA coefficient rankings.

UEFA rewards the best performing leagues. in European competition with additional places in the Champions League, while the Premier League has dominated for most of this season. A total of nine English clubs reached the knockout stage, creating a huge advantage thanks to consistent results.

As a result, the team that finishes fifth in the Premier League is already guaranteed a ticket to next season’s Champions League. A similar situation happened in the 2024/25 edition, when Newcastle United took advantage.

The competition for this position remains very strong. Liverpool are currently fifth, followed by Chelsea, while Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland, Newcastle United and Bournemouth are also in the running.

If Aston Villa or Liverpool win a European trophy and finish outside the top four, the Premier League could have six teams in the Champions League next season.

In an even more extreme scenario, if both of these teams win trophies and finish fifth and sixth, then seventh place can ensure qualification. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest could also factor into the scheme if they win the Europa League, potentially taking the number of English teams in the Champions League to six.
