The death toll from a boat capsize in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has risen to nine, officials announced, Anadolu reports.

The incident took place at the Bargi dam reservoir in the state’s Jabalpur district on Thursday when the tourist boat capsized due to a sudden storm. Since then, a major rescue operation is underway.

Atul Singh, a senior police official, said five more bodies were recovered in the morning, taking the total death toll to nine. He announced that Indian Army personnel have arrived at the scene to join the rescue operation.

Singh said some bodies are believed to be still trapped inside, but added that the exact number remains unclear due to poor visibility.

“So far around 28 people have been rescued safely,” he said, adding that six more are believed to be missing.
