Experts speak: Anxiety and trauma are often confused, but they have different roots!

Many people believe they suffer from anxiety, when the root of the problem may be unhealed trauma. According to mental health specialists, these two conditions have similar symptoms, but they are not the same.

An analysis published in “The Lancet Psychiatry” explains that anxiety is a reaction to fear of what may happen in the future, while trauma is related to the way the brain continues to react to a past event.

Both can be accompanied by rapid heartbeat, insomnia, tension, irritability and difficulty concentrating. It is this similarity that makes them often confused.

Psychologists explain that people with trauma can experience flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance of situations that remind them of the event and a constant sense of danger, even when they are safe.

Experts emphasize that treatment varies according to the diagnosis. While anxiety can be treated with stress management techniques and therapy, trauma requires specific approaches that help the brain reprocess the traumatic experience.

According to specialists, self-diagnosis through social networks can be dangerous, as the symptoms of trauma, anxiety and depression often overlap.
