The barks of trees absorb methane and contrast the climate crisis.
From the detailed analysis in this aspect, it seems that the barks store between 25-50 tons of methane per year, this amount is equal to what the soil manages to absorb, the only natural element that performs this function.
So forests are vital for life and our planet, and stopping deforestation is of great importance. Wood is the rarest element in the entire universe, found only on Earth, and environmental conservation and respect for forests is primary for all life balances.
Also the largest organism of our planet with a volume of 1487 m³, is a tree, a Giant Cypress, with a height of 84 m, with a circumference of 31 m, and about 2500 years old. It is called Grand Sherman, located in the Sequoia National Park in California, USA, a subfamily of Cypresses, inside which there are 5 of the 10 largest and oldest trees on Earth, within a virgin forest of 819 km².
Also, these giant cypresses have a bark that is about 60-90 cm thick, and has no wax, traditionally red in color, it has the ability to play the role of an extraordinary natural shield resisting wind, fires and diseases, and this is the reason they live long and grow a lot.
Despite the staggering height of these giant conifers, they have roots that do not extend more than one meter deep, but extend in width, covering a fairly large surface, intertwining with the roots of other trees, thus becoming a fairly solid network. They grow mainly in the Sierra Nevada, in this National Park, and when they reach the end of their life, they generate another new life, since they are an incredible reservoir of moisture and nutrients for young and other plants.
These trees do not burn, and when a giant sequoia was struck by lightning, it continued to burn for a year without collapsing and continuing its life. Even another peculiarity of nature’s giants is the arson controlled by the experts of the National Park, since in this way forest repopulation is guaranteed. During the fire in fact, which are essential for their life, the release of heat makes it possible to open the calyces to release the seeds, falling on the cleared ground and regenerating new trees.
From all these abilities, longevity, resistance, renewal, strength, size, height, the trees of the cypress family have a strong symbolism in human cultures, symbolizing the Eternal Wood.
The Giant Sequoia Forest in California with these plant creatures that have defied centuries and millennia are a natural monument.
