Endocrinologists advise that certain daily habits can make it more difficult to keep blood sugar at healthy levels, increasing over time the risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, writes EatingWell.

“Millions of people live with diabetes or prediabetes without knowing it. Many of the complications of diabetes can be prevented if the disease is detected and managed in time,” says endocrinologist Jennifer Cheng.

According to specialists, these are the five habits that should be avoided:

Consumption of drinks with a lot of sugar, carbonated drinks, sweet juices, coffee or tea with sugar cause an immediate increase in blood sugar.

“Regular consumption of these drinks is associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes”, said endocrinologist Sowjanya Naha.

Sitting for many hours, lack of movement makes the organism less sensitive to insulin. Even a short walk after meals can help lower blood sugar levels.

Excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates, foods such as sugary cereals, sweets, chips and pretzels cause large fluctuations in blood sugar. Instead, fruits, vegetables and whole grains are recommended.

“Whole fruits are rich in fiber and nutrients that help keep blood sugar more stable”, explained endocrinologist Anastasios Manessis.

Insufficient sleep, lack of sleep increases the stress hormone, cortisol, making it more difficult to control blood sugar and increasing resistance to insulin.

Skipping meals, eating at irregular times or not eating breakfast can negatively affect the way the body processes sugar.

“It’s important for the body to have a routine. A protein-rich breakfast helps stabilize blood sugar throughout the day,” said Manessis.

Experts also recommend consuming more fiber-rich, nutritious foods. drink enough water, manage stress, combine carbohydrates with protein or healthy fats and do physical activity regularly.

“Blood sugar control depends on the habits we repeat every day, not on a single choice. Even small daily changes can have a big impact on health,” concluded Naha.
