How to measure food if you don’t have a kitchen scale

Housewives often encounter difficulties in weighing the food they have to cook or consume. But don’t worry, sometimes the eyes and the feeling are the best “scale”. A few basic containers are enough for this.

A large spoon can serve as a basic measure, it holds about 15 ml of liquid or approximately 10 to 12 grams of flour. A teaspoon holds about 5 ml, while a standard kitchen cup has a capacity of about 240 ml.

If a recipe calls for half a cup, you can estimate it as half a cup of regular coffee.

For those without a scale, here are some practical guidelines: one handful of flour is roughly half a cup, while two handfuls is roughly one cup. An average banana weighs about 120 grams, an apple about 150, while an average egg weighs between 50 and 60 grams. Butter can also be measured with tablespoons, one tablespoon contains approximately 15 grams.

It is important to use the same container to measure all the ingredients in a recipe when preparing the dish.

In this way, you will maintain the proportions and achieve a balanced result. If you are not sure about the amount, add the ingredients gradually and adjust them according to the texture especially when it comes to flour or liquid.
