Hundreds of people were left homeless after a massive fire in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, affected more than 300 houses, according to state media on Tuesday, Anadolu reported.

The fire broke out late Monday in central Jakarta’s Kemayoran neighborhood, leaving 620 people homeless after it engulfed a densely populated residential area, Antara News agency reported, citing officials. premises.

Jakarta’s Central Fire and Rescue Agency said the flames affected 330 families, displacing residents in several neighborhood blocks.

“There are approximately 620 people who lost their homes,” said the agency’s head, Syarifudin.

Firefighters faced significant challenges during the operation, including blocked roads, large crowds of passers-by and residents. who were trying to retrieve items as the fire spread.

Authorities said the fire was brought under control around 11:30 p.m. local time and was completely extinguished by 4:15 a.m. Tuesday. A total of 35 fire engines and 175 people were deployed to bring the flames under control.

Officials said an assessment of the damage and relief measures for displaced families are underway.
