IATA: Europe may face flight cancellations due to lack of jet fuel

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has warned that Europe could face flight cancellations towards the end of May due to a lack of jet fuel as supply disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East continue to weigh on global markets, Anadolu reports. IATA director general Willie Walsh.

Walsh said the industry group also estimated that “toward the end of May we may start to see some cancellations in Europe due to jet fuel shortages,” adding that such disruptions are already occurring in parts of Asia.

He said airlines are trying to secure alternative supply routes, but stressed that governments should also prepare backup plans in case fuel rationing becomes necessary. “Along with efforts to secure alternative supply lines, it is important that authorities have well-communicated and well-coordinated plans in place in case rationalization becomes necessary,” Walsh said.

The warning came after the IEA estimated that European countries could face jet fuel shortages within six weeks, as supplies from the Middle East dwindle due to the war with Iran.

The IEA told Anadolu that the outlook will depend on whether European countries can replace lost supplies from the Middle East with imports from other international markets. She pointed out that the Middle East accounts for 75 percent of Europe’s net jet fuel imports.

Energy prices have risen and shortages have emerged in some types of fuel, after the war with Iran, which began on February 28, led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on energy facilities. Rising fuel costs and supply pressures have already caused disruptions and flight cancellations as governments in Asia and Europe have tried to limit the fallout.
