Iran has agreed to suspend its nuclear program indefinitely and will not receive any of its frozen funds from the U.S., President Donald Trump said Friday, Anadolu reports.
Trump told Bloomberg News that direct talks with Iran on a permanent end to the war will “most likely” take place this weekend, but did not specify who would lead the U.S. delegation. The US president said he “might” travel to Pakistan to sign a deal.
“Most of the key points have been finalized. It will move very quickly,” Trump said during a brief telephone interview with the media.
An earlier round of talks held last weekend ended without a deal, despite hours of negotiations. A two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan is expected to expire early next week.
Asked if the moratorium on Iran’s nuclear program would end after 20 years, Trump said it would not be time-bound. “Not years, unlimited,” he said.
Details of the deal being negotiated have not yet been confirmed.
The interview came hours after news site Axios reported that Trump is considering unlocking $20 billion in frozen Iranian funds in exchange for Tehran handing over its uranium stockpile. Trump denied that, saying “no” when asked if he was considering releasing any Iranian funds.
Referring to the Israel-Lebanon truce he helped broker, Trump said the U.S. will work to turn it into a lasting deal.
“We hope to get along with everybody and we’re going to fix Lebanon,” the president said. “We will not bomb Lebanon and we will not allow anyone to do so,” he added.
