The Prime Minister of Ireland, Michael Martin, has condemned Israel for the seizure of humanitarian flotilla ships headed for Gaza in international waters, calling the action “unacceptable” and calling for respect for international law, reports Anadolu.
Speaking to reporters in Dublin, Martin criticized Israel’s seizure of ships participating in the Sumud Global Flotilla, stressing that Israel must respect international law. humanitarian law and the rule of law.
“It is unacceptable that Israel does not fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law,” he said.
Martin said Ireland will raise the issue at EU level, adding that Dublin has already questioned the EU-Israel association agreement in light of developments in Gaza and recent events in Lebanon.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Ireland’s Helen McEntee condemned the seizure of ships in international waters off the coast of Greece and called on Israeli authorities to “immediately release all Irish citizens detained during this operation” and “fulfill their obligations under international law”.
The Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla was attacked on Thursday near the Greek island of Crete, about 600 nautical miles from its destination, the Gaza ravaged by blockade.
The first ships of the flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, left Barcelona on April 12, while the main fleet left the Italian island of Sicily on April 26, with the aim of defying Israel’s years-long blockade of Gaza.
Israel has imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving Its 2.4 million inhabitants face severe shortages of food and essential supplies.
The Israeli army launched an offensive against Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 72,000 people, injuring over 172,000 others and causing widespread destruction throughout the enclave.
