Syria’s Ministry of Justice has declared that preserving the country’s unity and sovereignty is a red line, warning that any call or action that challenges it will be treated as a serious crime against state security, reports Anadolu.
In a statement broadcast by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the ministry said that the protection of national unity and sovereignty is “an unshakable constitutional principle that does not allow violation”.
The ministry warned that any call or practice that undermines this principle constitutes serious crimes that affect the security of the state and will face strict legal measures to protect the country’s supreme national interest.
She emphasized that the Syrian state remains committed to the rule of law and respect for public rights and freedoms guaranteed by the constitution. Freedom of thought and expression, the ministry said, is a protected right, but must be exercised within legally defined limits that serve the public interest and preserve civil peace.
The Syrian ministry said existing laws regulate these rights through mandatory legal controls and procedures, aimed at protecting citizens, preserving public and private property, and preventing actions that could disrupt security or paralyze public services.
Any violation of these rules, she warned, constitutes a clear violation of the law.
The statement states that the state makes a clear and decisive distinction between the peaceful and legal expression of thought and actions that include incitement, abuse or threats to civil peace. She added that prohibited actions include the use of sectarian or religious language as well as any form of hate speech or inciting division in society.
These actions are criminalized under Syrian law and require accountability and prosecution, as they pose a direct threat to social unity and stability, the ministry said, adding that state institutions will not tolerate any violation of the law and that the law will apply to everyone without exception or discrimination, regardless of status, affiliation or motive.
The ministry called on citizens to fully respect the law while exercising their rights and fulfill their national responsibilities, adding that the competent authorities will take all necessary legal measures against violators and will enforce the law firmly to protect public order, maintain civil peace and ensure the security of the state.
The statement comes amid increased tensions in western and central Syria, as authorities try to maintain internal stability.
On Sunday, gunmen targeted security forces as they defended demonstrations in coastal cities and parts of central Syria, killing eight and wounding dozens of security personnel and civilians in the city of Latakia.
The new Syrian administration is working to strengthen security measures across the country and go after remnants of the previous regime, accused of inciting security turmoil.
Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia, ending the Baath Party regime that had been in power since 1963. A new transitional administration, led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, was formed in January.
