Erling Haaland has admitted that Norway’s historic victory over Brazil still seems unbelievable to him. The Manchester City striker was Norway’s big hero, scoring two late goals to send his nation into the World Cup quarter-finals.
Norway knocked out the five-time world champions 2-1 in New Jersey in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. Haaland unlocked the score in the 79th minute with a precise header, while in the 90th minute he scored the second goal with a low shot, sealing the historic qualification.
The match had other dramatic moments. Bruno Guimaraes missed a penalty for Brazil in the first half, while Neymar scored from the penalty spot in the dying seconds, but his goal only served as a consolation.
After the match, Haaland spoke on his personal YouTube channel, where he shared the great emotions after the triumph against one of the most iconic national teams in the history of football.
“Brazil is a football nation. It is probably the first country you learn when you start following football, because of all the legends who have played there. The jersey, the country, the passion, all the big names they have had. It’s a bit unbelievable to play against Brazil,” said Haaland.
The Norwegian striker admitted that Brazil’s status as big favorites had made it easier for Norway to play, as Stale Solbakken’s team played without pressure.
He even admitted that he had never imagined that Norway would managed to beat a star-studded national team like Brazil.
“It still seems unbelievable to me, like something very far-fetched. I never imagined it could happen, so the fact that we actually managed to beat Brazil seems even more surreal. It’s been incredible. I need to calm down and get some sleep because I’m completely exhausted. It’s amazing and breathtaking,” he said.
With this victory, Norway has written history by securing a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time. The fantastic appearance of the goalkeeper Orjan Nyland and the extraordinary form of Haaland have significantly increased the confidence in the Norwegian camp.
Haaland has already equaled the figure of Kylian Mbappe with seven goals in the race for the “Golden Boot”, making the individual battle for the best scorer of the tournament even more interesting.
But the next test will be even more difficult. Norway will face England in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Miami.
The English team is coming off a hard-fought win over Mexico and is looking to build momentum heading into the final stages. On the other hand, Norway enters this duel with high morale after the elimination of Brazil and with Haaland in the best form.
For the Norwegians, the dream continues. For Haaland, the victory over Brazil is still an unreal moment. /GazetaExpress/
