The Assembly of North Macedonia held a commemorative session for the anniversary of the tragedy of the fire in Koçan, which caused dozens of victims, reports Anadolu.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Afrim Gashi, addressed the attendees, including the victims’ families, emphasizing that March 16 of last year marked a gloomy morning after a tragic night that took the lives of 63 young people, leaving deep wounds in the heart of the country.
He emphasized the importance of reflection and solidarity, saying that the commemorative session is not about institutional formality, but is a joint bowing of the state to the lost lives and the families who endure the pain.
“Today, after a year, we have gathered in this hall to remember, to reflect and to honor with respect the names that died. We have gathered as rarely, not as a position of opposition, not as representatives of parties or institutions, but as a society that was seriously hurt. We are here as people who sympathize with the pain of these family members, to give them a message that they are not alone in this pain,” said Gashi.
The Speaker of the Assembly called on the competent institutions – the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the courts, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and investigative bodies to work with professionalism, independence and transparency for justice and peace for the families.
underlined the solidarity of the citizens, the help of doctors, firefighters, police, the Red Cross and friendly countries, thanking for the dedication and compassion shown.
In conclusion, Gashi emphasized that the memory of the victims should live in everyone and that this tragedy should serve as a guide for a just state with the rule of law.
“Let Koçan be the last tragedy of our country, but also our guide for a just state with the rule of law”, declared the speaker of the Assembly of North Macedonia.
