The famine crisis in Somalia worsens, over 500,000 people displaced by drought

Somalia is facing an increasingly severe hunger crisis, while the ongoing drought has forced over 500,000 people to leave their homes this year alone.

According to humanitarian data, over 90 percent of the displacements have been caused by drought, while the country already counts around 3.3 million displaced people. The failure of seasonal rainfall has destroyed crops, killed livestock and worsened poverty in rural areas.

Displaced families are facing a high risk of starvation. Many of them have walked for days, feeding on wild plants, to reach the displacement camps, where they often do not find the necessary help.

A 40-year-old woman, who has been forced to leave her home five times, says that she no longer has anything to feed her family. “This is the fifth time I’ve been away and I’m still dealing with drought,” she said.

Meanwhile, funding for humanitarian aid has dropped sharply. Only 14 percent of the requested funds have been secured so far, leaving many communities without support.

Organizations warn that recent seasonal rainfall is not enough to recover the damage caused by consecutive years of drought, while urgent aid needs remain great. /message
