The President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, has expressed hope for a ceasefire with Israel during a meeting planned in Washington, reports Anadolu.
This statement came during the meeting of President Aoun in Beirut with the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, where according to the Lebanese presidency, Aoun said that he expects the meeting tomorrow “to result in a ceasefire in Lebanon with the aim of starting direct negotiations” between the two countries.
“There is now an opportunity to reach a lasting solution, which is what Lebanon wants. However, this cannot be a unilateral solution. Israel must respond to Lebanese, Arab and international calls to stop attacks on Lebanon and start negotiations,” Aoun said.
The Lebanese president said Israel’s successive wars against Lebanon “have failed to achieve their objectives since 1982”.
“The destruction of Lebanese territory by Israel and the targeting of public and private institutions is not a solution. Diplomatic solutions have always been the best way to resolve armed conflicts around the world”, he added.
Envoys of the governments of Lebanon and Israel are expected to meet in Washington tomorrow for talks aimed at securing a ceasefire and launching negotiations on live.
