UN report: War in Iran could push 32 million more people worldwide into poverty

A United Nations report states that 32 million more people could be pushed into poverty worldwide due to the impact of the war in Iran.

“The world is facing a triple shock,” the United Nations Development Program report said, with energy, food and economic growth affected by the conflict and developing countries expected to be hardest hit.

“While the impacts are focused on countries directly affected by the conflict and those dependent on imported energy, the findings show significant long-term damage to the poorest countries far removed from the fighting,” UNDP said.
Another 32 million people could fall into poverty “under the worst-case scenario,” the report said.

UNDP administrator Alexander De Croo said the war was “development in reverse.”
