Iran has sent its response to Pakistani mediators to the latest U.S. cease-fire proposal and wants negotiations to focus on a permanent end to the war, Iranian state media said Sunday.
State television said Iran wants to end the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and ensure the safety of maritime shipping.
Washington’s latest proposal deals with an agreement on to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and withdraw Iran’s nuclear program, an issue Tehran would prefer to discuss later.
There has been no comment yet from the White House on Iran’s response.
Meanwhile, the fragile ceasefire was put to the test on Sunday when a drone started a small fire on a ship near Qatar, while the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait reported that drones entered their airspace.
The United Arab Emirates blamed Iran for its attack. No casualties were reported and no one immediately claimed responsibility. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has called it a “dangerous and unacceptable escalation that threatens the security of maritime trade routes and life supplies in the region”.
Iran and allied armed groups have used drones to carry out hundreds of strikes since the start of the war with US and Israeli strikes on February 28.
