Discovered by a shepherd, attacks on Iran from there

Israel has built a secret military base in a remote part of the Iraqi desert to support airstrikes in the war against Iran, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Several people familiar with the matter, including senior US officials, told the WSJ that the IDF built the post shortly before the attack on Iran began. The secret base housed Air Force special forces and served as a logistics facility. The base was also intended to serve as a back-up facility in case Israeli pilots were shot down during an attack on Iran.

The Wall Street Journal says the base was almost discovered early in the war, in March, when a local shepherd reported unusual helicopter activity in the area. The Iraqi military has sent forces to investigate the report.

Israel attacked Iraqi soldiers from the air to prevent them from reaching the base, the report said. Iraq condemned the attack, which killed one soldier and wounded two others.

The WSJ said the base helped Israel conduct hundreds of airstrikes against Iran during its military campaign, which began on February 28 with joint US-Israel strikes against Iran. /tesheshi
