Crafts of hope in Gaza: Ramadan lanterns from aid boxes

Monday, February 16th 2026

Ahead of Ramadan 2026, displaced Palestinians in Gaza are finding creative ways to preserve traditions despite the destruction. In a tent camp in Khan Younis, artisan Reham Shurrab has turned her temporary shelter into a workshop of hope.

She uses cardboard boxes from humanitarian aid, tent scraps and woolen threads collected from the rubble to create traditional Ramadan lanterns (fanous). These recycled lanterns give families an affordable way to bring joy to their children during the month of fasting, while for Reham they are an important source of income amid rising prices. /message
