Gauze, plastic collected from waste is being converted into pipes to meet water needs

In Gaza, plastic materials collected from garbage heaps and the ruins of destroyed houses are being recycled in makeshift factories using rudimentary methods to produce water pipes that will provide people with the water they need, reports Anadolu.

Palestinians are taking initiatives to solve the water crisis caused by the destruction of infrastructure as a result of Israeli attacks.

These projects, implemented with very rudimentary equipment and methods primitive, they aim to ease the suffering of Palestinians who have been waiting in line for water since 2023 and farmers who want to irrigate their fields.

In factories operating for this purpose in northern Gaza City, plastics collected from waste are sorted, shredded and prepared for recycling as raw materials.

Arafat El-Kassas, the owner of a plastic shredding factory, stated that since the raw materials do not come from outside, they use plastic that children and young people painstakingly dig out of garbage and rubble.

Noting that thousands of people living in tents need many products in their daily lives, Kassas said: “We are making things from nothing. People have many needs. We are trying to alleviate their suffering.”

Khalil al-Ramlavi, the owner of the factory where they are produced tubes, stated that they meet the needs of displaced people suffering from thirst in tents and farmers who want to irrigate their fields with the tubes they produce.

Ramlavi, who said he went to find a solution to this need of people with the experience he gained in the plastic sector over many years, noted:

“These tubes we produce greatly facilitate the distribution of water to displaced Palestinians who are waiting in line for water. Since I also experienced this problem, I tried to find a solution to these people’s problems by producing water pipes”.

Ramlavi explained that the industry in Gaza has been severely affected by the attacks, with 98 percent of factories destroyed, and that they are trying to do something with great difficulty, impossibility and primitive conditions.

Ramlavi stressed that they were experiencing shortages of raw materials, spare parts, fuel, engine oil and generators, adding that they were working under constant pressure to stop production due to a lack of raw materials.
