German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Europe is determined to maintain the functioning of the NATO alliance, despite growing tensions with the American president regarding the war against Iran.
During a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Merz emphasized that European countries want to continue transatlantic cooperation and keep the military alliance strong.
“We are really ready to keep this alliance alive even in the future”, he said.
According to the German chancellor, the differences between Europe and the US have become more visible after Germany and some other European countries refused to support the US and Israel’s war against Iran.
However, Merz underlined that both sides share the same strategic objective: preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
“We know that there are differences. We know that we are facing challenges, but our ultimate goal is to end this conflict and ensure that Iran is not able to produce nuclear weapons,” he said.
