Living proof of schemes with public funds ending up in the middle of nowhere
In the rural landscape of Western Hungary, between the towns of Zalaegerszeg and Zalaszentiván, lies a strange monument to what happens when the thirst to profit from public funds meets failed planning and a total lack of accountability.
This new roundabout, surrounded by open fields and completely isolated from any functioning road network, is not just an engineering error, but a pure symbol of the greed that characterizes the projects the infrastructural bulge.
Seeing it from above, the structure looks like an absurd anomaly, as if someone had thrown it from the sky and forgotten it there. But the truth behind it is a story of noisy government promises and running after European Union funds.
It all started in 2021 with the usual political pomp, when the Hungarian Foreign Minister announced plans for a large logistics center and a container terminal of the company Metrans.
This project was supposed to be a strategic node that would connect the Adriatic ports with Europe. Central, creating an economic corridor that would bypass Budapest. With this reasoning, the municipality hastened to apply for non-refundable funds from the EU to build the access roads and the necessary roundabout.
However, in 2023, when the roundabout was completed at a cost of around 1.25 million euros, it became clear that the priority had not been development, but simply spending money. While the roundabout’s concrete glistens in the middle of the field, work on the promised terminal has yet to begin and not a shovelful of dirt has been thrown for the logistics center.
This absurdity is further compounded when you realize that the entire investment hinges on a rail line that is still in the early stages of procurement, rendering the project virtually unusable until at least 2029.
This dramatic delay clearly shows how politics often builds “castles in the sand” just to justify plowing fat budgets, without having a real plan for their maintenance or functionality.
Today, this feat of engineering serves only as a silent testimony of corruption and mismanagement, where taxpayers’ money has been transformed into a roundabout that leads to nothing, waiting for time and oblivion to turn it into a strange tourist attraction for those who want to see the consequences of political greed in the middle of nowhere. tessheshi
