Germany sees “windows for talks” with Russia to end the war in Ukraine

The German government believes that talks with Russia aimed at ending the war in Ukraine could take place in the coming months, despite the escalation of hostilities, according to a report published today, Anadolu reports.

“A window for talks between the European side and Russia is slowly opening. However, fierce fighting in recent days shows that this process is likely to take months, not just weeks,” the German news agency (DPA) quoted government sources said.

Asked about the report during a press conference in Berlin, deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer said: “We have repeatedly emphasized that we have a strong interest in seeing this war end.”

“We have always said that if such an opportunity arose, we would certainly be ready to do our part,” he added. According to the DPA, discussions are currently taking place among European countries about who can lead such talks on behalf of Europe.

“There are strong indications that ‘E3’ will continue to play a key role in this process,” government sources were quoted as saying. In recent months, European countries have been sidelined in negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine.

The term “E3” refers to Germany, Great Britain and France.
