The International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Tuesday called on governments and partners to urgently strengthen cross-border cooperation to curb the current Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, Anadolu reports.

In a statement, the UN agency warned that border closures only risk people’s movements being clandestine and increase the risk of transmission.

According to According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, the number of confirmed Ebola cases in Congo has exceeded 300.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the virus has risen to 48. Uganda has recorded 15 confirmed cases and one death so far.

“Viruses do not stop at borders, and neither should our response,” said IOM Deputy Director-General for Operations, Ugochi. Daniels.

She added that border closures often force people to move through informal routes where health checks and surveillance are limited.

IOM stressed that movement restrictions do not stop migration, but often shift it to less monitored routes, making it difficult to track and detect cases early.
