An artificial intelligence system designed to detect potential suicide attempts has been deployed in dozens of stations and shopping facilities across Japan, helping to prevent at least two deaths, according to its developer, reports Anadolu.
Developed by Asilla Inc. based in Tokyo, the system analyzes security camera footage to identify behaviors associated with possible suicide attempts, such as walking, standing near the edges of platforms or lingering around roofs and railings.
When suspicious behavior is detected, the system immediately notifies station employees and security personnel. In some places, warnings are also broadcast over loudspeakers.
According to the company, the technology helped detain a man at a commercial facility after it detected him entering a restricted area. A security guard approached the man, who later admitted that he intended to commit suicide.
In another incident, a child was observed lingering by a railing on the top floor of a building for an extended period of time. After being notified, a security guard discovered that the child had written a suicide note.
Asilla Inc. said it has partnered with about 200 commercial establishments and other organizations since 2022 to train the artificial intelligence system using roughly 7 million footage from security cameras.
The company said the technology can identify signs of illness, immobility and violent behavior. So far the system has been installed in about 30 commercial establishments and approximately 10 railway stations in Tokyo and neighboring Kanagawa Prefecture.
