Kosovo, North Macedonia and Albania continue firefighting activities

Kosovo, North Macedonia and Albania continue extinguishing the fires that have engulfed the forest areas of this region affected by high temperatures, reports Anadolu.

Firefighting teams and emergency units from the three countries of the region are working intensively to bring the flames under control and prevent their further spread. During the last two days, Kosovo has fought with 57 fires, North Macedonia with 27 and Albania with 34 fires.

Firefighters in Kosovo continue to fight fires, respectively from 57 fires in the country locating 46 of them, while 11 fires continue to be active.

The Agency for Emergency Management in Kosovo has announced that the management of the situation is being coordinated complete with Professional Fire and Rescue Units, as well as appealed to all citizens to show increased caution, avoid any action that could cause a fire and immediately report any fire to the competent institutions.

The director of the agency, Genc Metaj, in a press conference this week said that only in the last few days a total of 633 fires have been reported throughout the territory of Kosovo. Compared to the month of August 2024, Metaj added that this year there has been an increase in the number of fire cases.

Macedonian authorities, on the other hand, announced that until noon today, ten fires were registered in open spaces throughout the country, of which six fires are active, one under control and three others have been extinguished.

The active fires are in Lojane and Tabanoc, where a low vegetation and mixed forest, as well as in the Municipality of Brod, in the Jasen area, where the fire involving a mixed forest has been active since yesterday. There are also active fires in the village of Bekirlija in Dollnen, the village of Romanovce in Kumanovë and in the village of Sllupçan in Likovë.

Meanwhile, the fire is under control in the Jegunovce Municipality between the villages of Rogačevë, Jazhinca and Orashe e Poshtme, where pasture and mixed forest have been involved.

During the last 24 hours, 34 fires have also been registered in Albania. According to the Ministry of Defense, 27 have been extinguished, five are active and two are being monitored.

54 firefighting vehicles and 690 operational forces have been engaged in firefighting operations, supported by 110 Armed Forces troops with two firefighting vehicles. Two helicopters of the Albanian Air Force and one helicopter from the United Arab Emirates were also deployed.

Kosovo, North Macedonia and Albania, like many other countries in Southern Europe, have faced forest fires caused by high temperatures and prolonged drought.

Country authorities stress that increased preparedness and quick intervention remain key to preventing more serious consequences, and call on citizens to show increased caution and immediately report any potential fire source.
