Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that nuclear weapons are the “cornerstone” of Russia’s national security, according to the Russian medium Vesti, Anadolu broadcasts.
Peskov said that Russia’s nuclear arsenal protects the country from threats to its existence.
“A nuclear power cannot be threatened; its existence cannot be put at risk. This is what gives us the opportunity to be sure of this and this is the basis of nuclear deterrence,” he declared.
Commenting on relations with Europe, Peskov said that the growing discussions within the European Union about possible negotiations with Russia constitute a “big change” and are in Moscow’s interest.
“This active discussion on this topic (dialogue with Russia), the shift towards the idea that one day we will have to talk with the Russians – this is a good thing,” he said, recalling that Russia was not responsible for the disruption dialogue with Europe and that it is interested in rebuilding ties.
Speaking of a possible EU negotiator for talks with Russia, Peskov referred to the head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, saying that “it is in her interest not to be a negotiator with Russia”. he.
Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia has developed nuclear capabilities “unparalleled in the world” as Moscow continues to modernize its nuclear deterrent forces.
Putin said Russia accelerated the development of advanced weapons systems after the US withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002.
“That is why Russia began developing advanced systems unparalleled in the world, able to reliably penetrate existing and future missile defense systems”, he said during a video conference with the commander of the Strategic Missile Forces, Sergey Karakayev, dedicated to the successful test of the Sarmat missile.
