Britain has deployed a new low-cost missile system in the Middle East, in a move aimed at strengthening defenses against drone attacks targeting “UK forces, citizens and regional partners”, reports Anadolu.

The Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Saturday that the Advanced Precision Weapons System (APKWS) has already been installed on RAF Typhoon fighter jets operating in the region, enabling aircraft to destroy drones and other threats “at a fraction of the cost” of missiles currently in use.

“The system has already been deployed in operations in the Middle East with missions carried out by RAF Typhoon fighter jets of 9 Squadron as part of missions to protect the British people, interests and partners from threats,” the statement said.

Luke Pollard, minister for readiness and defense industry, has said: “This has been an excellent collaboration with industry to test and deploy this system within a few months, which will help the RAF shoot down many more drones at a much lower cost”. it.

APKWS uses a laser targeting system to convert unguided missiles into precision guided weapons capable of striking drones and other aerial threats.

The ministry said the development of cheaper air defense systems will provide a more sustainable response to the growing use of drones in modern conflicts.
