Why do babies have colic and how can you relieve them?

Stomach cramps are very common in babies, especially during the first months of life.

They are often accompanied by lots of crying, worry and difficulty calming down, making parents feel helpless.

Experts show that cramps can be caused by the digestive system not yet fully developed, the accumulation of gases or the way of feeding. In some cases, the baby may swallow air while drinking milk, which causes bloating and colic.

Parents can help by holding babies upright after feedings to expel burps, gently massaging the abdomen and moving the baby’s legs slowly like a bicycle. Also, calmness and physical contact greatly help the baby to feel more comfortable.

If the cramps last for a long time or are accompanied by fever, vomiting or lack of food, parents should consult the pediatrician.
