The undeclared but natural demographic battle where the numbers make the law

In the last 10 years, North Macedonia is facing a decrease in the number of the population, but not in all communities. Albanians record positive numbers in terms of births and deaths, while Macedonians have recorded a negative natural increase of about 4,100 less people. Specialists emphasize that policies should be changed and that young couples should have support for creating families.

At the state level, 16,061 births and 20,201 deaths were registered, resulting in a negative natural increase. However, the division by ethnicity reveals a deep difference between the main communities.

Macedonian population: 6,841 births, 14,760 deaths, balance -7,919

Albanian population: 5,473 births, 3,309 deaths, balance +2,164

Among Macedonians, for every 100 births there were about 216 deaths, a clear indication of the aging of the population and the continuous decline in the birth rate. As for Albanians, for every 100 births there are about 60 deaths, which maintained a positive natural balance even in conditions of emigration.

Skopje (total): -17 (Macedonians -1,395, Albanians +1,287)

Karposh: -244 (Macedonians -242, Albanians +1)

Kisela Voda: -258 (Macedonians -253, Albanians 0)

Manastir: -459 (Macedonians -774, Albanians -15)

Chair: +351 (Macedonians -100, Albanians +427)

Saraj: +332 (Macedonians +3, Albanians +329)

Student: +137 (Macedonians +1, Albanians +84)

Haraça: +138 (Macedonians +2, Albanians +133)

Analysts estimate that the demographic change will directly affect the structure of education, the labor market and the pension system, as well as the political and economic balances of the country in the coming decades.

In the past, North Macedonia has had policies to increase the population, such as monthly payments for the third and fourth child, which have not shown success. visible. Recently, it has been announced the return of focus to new policies, including facilitations for the purchase of housing for young couples, with the aim of addressing the reasons why young people marry less often and start families late.

Even, controversially and to test public opinion, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski had declared that single people would pay taxes, a statement that was met with harsh reactions in the public opinion.
