The head of NATO’s Military Committee, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, warned on Tuesday that the alliance is facing an increasingly unstable security environment, saying that member states can no longer assume a period of stability, Anadolu reports.
“A sailor mends the sails when the sea is calm. We no longer have calm seas. We are already in a storm. So our job is not just to move anymore.” quickly, but to make better decisions while maintaining coherence, cohesion and strategic direction,” he said.
Dragone said NATO remains on constant alert “24 hours a day, 7 days a week” on all strategic fronts, including the eastern flank, the southern neighborhood and the High North, including the Arctic.
His comments came as NATO military leaders gathered in Brussels to discuss the position of forces, military planning, capabilities, innovation and adaptation amid what he described as a deteriorating security landscape.
“Since we last met in this format, in January, new crises have arisen. Existing crises have deepened. And, the security environment has become even more demanding,” Dragone said.
Beyond Ukraine, he noted continued instability throughout the southern region of NATO, the pressure on global trade routes, risks to energy flows and persistent hybrid threats, including cyber attacks, sabotage, disinformation campaigns and the misuse of new technologies.
He stressed that NATO has been tested recently, but it has demonstrated stronger deterrence and readiness.
“In war, deterrence and defense, the ability to understand, decide and act faster increasingly shapes the results,” he said. Dragons.
