Smoking not only damages the lungs and heart, but can also have serious consequences for the health of the eyes. Toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke pass into the bloodstream and can damage the delicate structures of the eye, especially the retina, lens and macula.
Experts warn that smoking increases the risk of serious diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma, which in certain cases can lead to permanent vision loss.
Nicotine affects the small blood vessels that supply the eye, causing their narrowing and favoring problems such as damage to the optic nerve, fluid accumulation in the retina and the progression of eye diseases.
Even after smoking cessation, some damage to the structures of the retina and small blood vessels may continue, especially in people with a genetic predisposition to macular degeneration.
The risk does not come only from smoke. Even the residues of nicotine and tar on the hands can pass to the contact lenses and cause burning, dryness and constant irritation of the eyes.
Experts also point out that passive smoke can also negatively affect the health of the eyes, especially in children and pregnant women, increasing the risk of vision problems in babies.
Even electronic cigarettes are not considered risk-free. Nicotine and some components of vaping liquids can cause oxidative stress and inflammation, linked to eye dryness and irritation.
The best way to reduce the risk is to stop smoking. Regular check-ups at the ophthalmologist, a diet rich in antioxidants, physical activity and cholesterol control can help maintain eye health.
