Spanish top diplomat: Israel is leading the Middle East to a permanent war

Monday, April 20th 2026

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said today that Israel is implementing the same military strategy in southern Lebanon as in Gaza while adding that it cannot maintain normal relations with the European Union due to ongoing human rights violations, reports Anadolu.

Albares told public broadcaster RTVE that the situation in Lebanon reflects a pattern of “preventing normal life for Lebanese citizens, destroying civil infrastructure, flagrant violation of international law, orders to forcibly relocate the population so that they cannot return as well as attacks from both sides on the UN force in Lebanon”.

According to him, all this shows that Israel seeks control over a part of a sovereign state. “This would be very serious for the stability of the Middle East and for the security of Israel itself,” warns Albares, adding that Israel “is leading the Middle East towards a permanent war”. “Israel must understand that it cannot have normal relations when human rights are blatantly violated,” Albares stressed.

Regarding the wider regional conflict, Albares said Spain will not participate in any military operation in the Strait of Hormuz, where tensions remain high despite a temporary ceasefire between Iran, the US and Israel.

“We will not participate in any military operation in the strait,” he said. adding that Spain favors diplomatic solutions.

Last week, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK and France would lead a “peaceful and protective” multinational mission to protect the strait once fighting in the region ends.

Albares called for the waterway to become “a free, safe and open passage for all ships without discrimination”, but said any future verification mechanism must led by the United Nations.

The Spanish top diplomat warned of rising military tensions between Iran and the US and urged Iran to participate in peace talks in Pakistan to avoid further escalation.
