Sanchez insists that the EU must terminate the agreement with Israel

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that his country will propose to the EU to terminate the association agreement with Israel due to violations of international law.

Speaking at a rally in Andalusia, Sánchez said that a government that violates international law or the principles of the European Union cannot be its partner, further intensifying his rhetoric against the Israeli government.

The Spanish prime minister has been one of Israel’s most vocal critics. within the EU in recent months. He accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of serious crimes in Gaza and called the joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran a “huge mistake”.

Criticism also comes of Israel’s military activities in the region, including attacks on Lebanon, which some European officials believe threaten the chances of a broader peace deal. Sánchez called for an immediate end to the conflict in the Middle East, warning of rising oil prices and massive displacement of populations.

Additional pressure on Israel is also coming through the initiative of the foreign ministers of Spain, Ireland and Slovenia, who in a letter addressed to the EU’s high representative for foreign policy, Kaja Kallas, declared that Israel is violating the provisions of the agreement with the EU. They cited the Israeli parliament’s decisions on the death penalty as well as violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank as reasons.

However, Madrid’s proposal faces serious obstacles. Finalizing the deal requires the unanimous support of all 27 EU members, which seems unlikely at this point. The group of countries led by Germany has previously opposed tougher measures against Israel.

We recall that a similar initiative by the European Commission from September of last year, which included sanctions against individual Israeli ministers and the suspension of parts of the trade agreement, did not receive the necessary majority.
