US Congressman Joe Wilson says Serbia must end its dependence on Russian energy, distance itself from Moscow, Beijing and Tehran, and act fully in line with Western institutions.
In an interview with Radio Free Europe’s Balkan Service, Wilson also reaffirmed his support for Kosovo’s independence and criticized Serbia for what he said were constant threats.
He said Belgrade must finally to join the European Union and NATO, but argued that this would require a clear break from authoritarian powers.
Wilson has sponsored a resolution in the US Congress calling for the 2027 Annual Session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to be held in Charleston, South Carolina, rather than Belgrade.
While he said the main goal is to hold this meeting in the United States, he cited relations Serbia’s relations with Russia, China and Iran, as well as its approach to Kosovo, as some of his concerns regarding Belgrade as the host of this meeting.
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly says that the American delegation had earlier informed it that Charleston could not host the session, and that Belgrade was then selected based on established procedures.
Wilson said that logistical concerns related to food, staff and translation have been sorted out in the meantime, and suggested that Belgrade could host this meeting in 2028.
