The Palestinian Authority protests against the removal of administration from Jordan

The Palestinian Authority has expressed great concern over reports that the US and Israel are considering a new plan for the administration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, one of the holiest sites for Muslims.

According to them, any change in the current status of the complex could have serious consequences for regional stability and existing religious and political balances.

The governor of Jerusalem from the Palestinian Authority stated that any attempt to remove Jordan’s historic role as custodian of Islamic and Christian holy sites in the city would constitute a violation of existing agreements and a sensitive status quo that has lasted for decades.

He emphasized that the Hashemite guardianship over the Al-Aqsa Mosque is internationally recognized and has served as an important mechanism for preserving the religious and administrative character of the complex. According to him, any change in this role would directly affect the stability of the holy site.

Media reports suggest that the proposal discussed could foresee the transformation of the complex into a space with a wider religious character, allowing greater access for different groups and increasing the administrative role of the Israeli authorities in the management of the site, including aspects of appointments and regulation of religious activities.

Palestinian and Jordanian officials warn that a such a change would represent a major departure from the existing status quo and could increase tensions in one of the most sensitive areas in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Jordan has recognized its role as custodian of the holy sites in Jerusalem since 1924, while this role was reaffirmed in the 1994 peace treaty with Israel. However, Amman has repeatedly expressed concerns that this role has been put at risk by developments in recent years.

On the ground, tensions around the Al-Aqsa Mosque have often been accompanied by clashes between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli forces, as well as visits by Jewish nationalist groups to the complex. These developments have increased fears of an escalation of the situation.

The Palestinian Authority has called on international organizations, including the UN and UNESCO, to intervene to preserve the current status and prevent any changes that could increase tensions.

According to them, any violation of Jordanian custody or the historic status of the Al-Aqsa Mosque would have serious consequences not only for Jerusalem, but for the whole the region. square
