France prosecutors open probe into possible foreign interference targeting pro-Palestine candidates

French prosecutors have opened an investigation into possible foreign interference that has targeted candidates of the left-wing party “La France Insoumise” (LFI), while the media reported today that the suspected operation has focused on politicians who have expressed their views on Gaza and the Palestinian issue, reports Anadolu.

The Paris Prosecutor’s Office announced that the investigation was opened “on its own initiative” to determine whether the campaigns of some candidates The LFI may have been the subject of an operation carried out “in the interest of a third state”.

The authorities said that the investigation was launched without a prior complaint or official referral.

The leader of the LFI, Jean-Luc Melenchon stated on social networks that three party figures were affected: Sebastien Delogu, François Piquemal and David Guiraud.

According to media reports, the investigation is based in part on the findings of Viginum, the French service for vigilance and protection against foreign digital intrusions, has identified an “artificial or automated distribution system” used to spread “inaccurate or misleading” content online.
