Israeli opposition parties have called on members of the Knesset to support a bill to dissolve the Knesset, which is expected to be put to a preliminary vote next Wednesday, reports Anadolu.
In a joint statement, the leaders of the opposition parties called for the dissolution of the Knesset and the holding of early elections.
As The Times of Israel reports, the statement said that “instead of continues to support a dysfunctional Knesset, we call on everyone to support the proposal to dissolve the Knesset, which will be presented next Wednesday, and to go to the elections as soon as possible”.
“Today the governing coalition withdrew all its bills from the agenda of Monday’s session, ahead of the expected preliminary vote on the bill,” it said.
According to the report, the timeline for the bill’s passage remains unclear, but it is likely to move quickly to the Knesset, where after preliminary approval it will be referred to the relevant committee and then presented for three plenary readings before becoming law.
If the Knesset is dissolved, Israel will go to early elections, unless they are held on their regular date of October 27, when the mandate legally ends. current Knesset.
Israel’s ruling coalition introduced a bill on May 13 to dissolve the Knesset amid a crisis over the recruitment of ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews, in a move seen as an attempt to block a similar move by the opposition.
General elections are scheduled to be held in October.
On Thursday, the leader of the opposition Yisrael party Beiteinu Avigdor Lieberman warned in media statements that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may take military action for electoral purposes amid growing talk of dissolving the Knesset and holding early elections.
Lieberman’s comments came as Israel continues to violate cease-fire agreements in Gaza and southern Lebanon on a daily basis, while expanding its occupation of the territory on both fronts and ramping up rhetoric against Iran, Lebanon and Gaza.
The opposition has long demanded early elections, a step that Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected.
Netanyahu has been wanted since 2024 by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip, where since October 2023 more than 72,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed.
