In an article in the DITA newspaper, the journalist Migena Aleksi reports on eight elderly people who died in solitude recently in Korça, which, as he writes, is a drama for this city, also under depopulation, even though it is ranked among the elite cities of Albania.
“In the last six months, a total of 8 elderly people have died in complete solitude inside their homes, an alarming figure that proves the total failure of the state to protect the third age.
The dramatic increase in the number of elderly people who live in isolation is a direct consequence of an Albania emptied of youth. Social workers in the field testify that visits to the home or a simple phone call are a matter of psychological survival for these people.
According to the official data of the Social Security, there are about 65 thousand pensioners in the Korça region. However, the state and local institutions have no evidence precisely how many of them are left at the mercy of fate, without any family or medical care.
Faced with this army of elderly people at risk, the reaction of the institutions is ridiculous compared to the West we want to belong to”, she writes.
This is completely true regarding the state. But this drama has another dimension that must be highlighted: the abandonment of the elderly by their own children. The state, no matter how social or sensitive it is, cannot play the role of family members for the elderly in its bosom. So, the most drama is exactly that. It is up to the level of a crime against your parents to take the ways of the world for a “better” life and abandon your parents in the suffering of loneliness.
Take it with you wherever you go, stay with them as long as they live! /square
