Symptoms of heart disease are not always the same. They can vary from person to person and, according to doctors, not everyone will have the same concerns
Swelling of the feet is usually a harmless problem and can be caused, for example, by sitting for a long time or by some injury. However, this is not always the case. In some cases, leg swelling can be a sign of heart disease.
Cardiovascular disease is a global problem. It is estimated that one in 12 people will develop some form of heart disease.
What are the symptoms of heart disease?
Symptoms of heart disease are not the same for all patients and it is possible that not everyone will recognize them in time.
A survey organized by the LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor service of 500 adults in the United Kingdom showed that only 46 percent of respondents knew that leg swelling can be a symptom of heart disease.
Doctors point out that the most common symptoms of heart disease are chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe fatigue and irregular heartbeat, but also leg swelling.
Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death in Serbia. Every year, more than 50 thousand citizens die from them, a number comparable to the population of a small town. Experts remind that healthy habits, early diagnosis and adherence to therapy are essential for maintaining heart health, Telegraph reports.
Chest pain is one of the most frequent and well-known symptoms of heart disease. Chest pain that appears as pressure, tightness, constriction or heaviness can be a sign of a heart attack.
This is a medical emergency in which every minute counts, so it is important to seek medical help as soon as possible.
According to the survey, 80 percent of the participants recognized chest pain as a symptom of heart disease, making it the most recognizable sign. Meanwhile, 77 percent of the respondents correctly identified difficulty in breathing as a symptom.
General physician, dr. Bhavini Shah, explains that when the heart doesn’t pump enough blood around the body, fluid can build up in the lungs. This makes breathing difficult and causes shortness of breath.
Irregular heartbeats can also be an indication of heart disease, which 70 percent of participants were aware of. About 66 percent of respondents said that extreme fatigue can also be a symptom.
While leg swelling, known in medicine as edema, occurs when fluids accumulate in the tissues. This symptom can worsen during the day and, in some cases, can be indicative of a heart problem, explains the doctor.
