Vitamin D and Calcium Together: What Happens to Bones and When Supplements Can Be a Problem

Calcium gives bones strength, while vitamin D helps the body absorb and use this mineral. For this very reason, they are often taken together, especially in old age and during the treatment of osteoporosis.

However, supplements are not necessary for everyone and the use of high doses without indication can cause health problems.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and most of it is found in bones and teeth. It is also needed for muscle function, transmission of nerve impulses, blood clotting and normal heart rhythm.

When we don’t get enough calcium, the body can start taking it from the bones to maintain the necessary level in the blood. If this continues for a long time, bones can gradually lose density and become more susceptible to fractures.

Without vitamin D, calcium is not used properly

Vitamin D is fat soluble and acts in the body in a similar way to a hormone. One of its main functions is to enable the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine.

In the absence of vitamin D, the body cannot efficiently use the calcium we get from food or supplements.

A pronounced deficiency in adults can lead to osteomalacia, a condition in which the bones become softer and can cause pain. Long-term deficiency can also contribute to osteoporosis and increased risk of fractures.

Vitamin D is also important for muscles. This is of particular importance in the elderly, because muscle weakness increases the risk of falls and, therefore, of fractures.

The combination may be beneficial for people who have insufficient calcium intake, confirmed vitamin D deficiency, osteoporosis, or an increased risk of fractures.

People who spend little time outdoors, those with diseases that prevent the absorption of nutrients, and patients who use certain medications that affect bones.

But a healthy person with a varied diet and adequate vitamin D levels won’t necessarily make bones stronger by taking large doses of supplements.

Most adults need about 1,000 mg of calcium per day. Needs typically increase in women after age 50 and in men after age 70, when the total daily amount can reach about 1,200 mg.

This includes calcium from food and supplements together.

For most adults, the recommended intake of vitamin D is about 600 IU or 15 micrograms per day, and after age 70 about 800 IU or 20 micrograms.

The limit of 4,000 IU per day is not a recommended dose, but the maximum limit that is generally considered tolerable for most adults. In case of a confirmed deficiency, the doctor can temporarily prescribe other doses.

The most common forms are calcium carbonate and calcium citrate.

Calcium carbonate is better absorbed when taken with food, while calcium citrate can be taken with or without food and is often more suitable for people who have less stomach acid or use drugs that reduce stomach acidity.

The body it absorbs calcium better in smaller amounts, so it’s usually advised not to take more than about 500 mg at a time.

Excessive amounts of vitamin D can cause dangerously high levels of calcium in the blood. Symptoms may include nausea, weakness, great thirst, frequent urination, confusion, and heart rhythm disturbances.

In more severe cases, kidney stones or damage may occur.

Calcium supplements may cause constipation and bloating, and taking too much may increase the risk of kidney stones.

Calcium may also interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine, iron, some antibiotics and some anti-osteoporosis drugs, so they should not be taken at the same time without professional advice.

Calcium and vitamin D are important when there is a deficiency or increased risk of osteoporosis, but they are not the only protection.

Walking, weight-bearing exercise, strength and balance exercises, not smoking and limiting alcohol are also important.

The best dose is not the most dose. big, but what responds to the real needs of the organism.
