In Prizren, the Memorial Academy dedicated to Rrustë Kabashi was held today, on the 116th anniversary of his execution in Prizren, Gazeta e Prizren reports.

In her speech, the Acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, said that the history of Rrustë Kabashi is closely related to Prizren and to the efforts of Albanians to organize resistance to Ottoman rule, after the suppression of the Albanian League. of Prizren.

She emphasized that Kabashi devoted more than three decades of his life to the struggle for freedom and that on August 18, 1910 he was sentenced to hanging in Prizren.

According to Haxhi, Rrustë Kabashi was among the figures who continued the patriotic activity even after the suppression of the League of Prizren. He participated in the assemblies and organized the resistance in Zojz, Podrimë and the surrounding area, while because of his activity the Ottoman authorities took punitive measures against his family and property.

“The towers of the leaders of Kabashi were burned, their property was confiscated, while the family members were forcibly sent to Prizren, as a means of pressure to force the leaders to surrender”, said Haxhiu.

She said. added that Rrustë Kabashi did not withdraw from the resistance and that, after the coming of the Young Turks to power in 1908, he again aligned himself against repressive policies and military interventions in Kosovo.

After the 1910 uprising, he was brought before the military court in Prizren and sentenced to death.

Haxhiu said that his execution did not remind him, as Rrustë’s name Kabashi remained in song and was passed down through the generations in Prizren and Kabash as a symbol of resistance.

“One hundred and sixteen years later, we remember Rrustë Kabashi from a free and independent Kosovo”, said Haxhiu, assessing that his effort for freedom is part of the long history of sacrifices that led to the state of Kosovo.

She emphasized that it is significant that exactly in Prizren where Rrustë Kabashi was convicted and hanged, today he is commemorated and honored by the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo and its citizens. /GeP
