Europe is engulfed by an extreme heat wave, temperatures break records, several countries are on alert

Southern and Western Europe are continuing to face an intense heat wave this weekend as well, while extreme temperatures are breaking seasonal records and alerting authorities in several countries of the continent.

France is on orange alert, Italy’s main cities are on red alert, while Spain and Portugal are recording temperatures approaching or exceeding historical limits. Satellite data from the European Copernicus Climate Program show that the heat wave has covered much of the continent, with the highest temperatures concentrated in Western and Southern Europe.

In France, high temperatures have also caused problems in infrastructure. In a suburb of Paris, tram tracks have been deformed by extreme heat, while in the French capital the thermometer has recorded 34-35 degrees Celsius, accompanied by high humidity and suffocating conditions. In some regions of the country, temperatures have reached up to 38 degrees Celsius, while parts of France continue to be affected by the so-called “thermal dome” phenomenon.

The residents of Paris have been looking for ways to cool off. In some areas, citizens have opened fire hydrants to protect themselves from the heat, causing concerns about the waste of water. French fire brigades have started intensive preparations against fires, as the authorities warn that the continuation of extreme temperatures could favor the explosion of large fires.

In Italy, high temperatures have emptied the streets of the main cities. Turin and other urban centers are experiencing difficult days, while the authorities have declared a red alert in several areas from the north to the center of the country. The situation is even worse in Portugal, where temperatures have approached 40 degrees Celsius, almost a month before the official start of the summer season. The authorities warn of increased danger to the lives of citizens, while meteorologists speak of unprecedented deviations from seasonal averages. According to meteorologists, current temperatures are 8 to 10 degrees Celsius higher than normal for this time of year, reflecting the unusual intensity of the phenomenon. Spain is also facing an extraordinary heat wave. In many areas of the north of the country, temperatures have exceeded 37 degrees Celsius, while the authorities report that dozens of people have lost their lives from causes related to the extreme heat.

Residents of the affected areas speak of unbearable conditions, with temperatures that make it difficult to rest at night.
