How Baki Goxhaj honored and shamed us

Disappointing not only the attitude of the government but also that of many Khoxallars towards Gaza

The decision of an Albanian to join the “Sumud” flotilla, which aims to break the blockade of Gaza and send humanitarian aid to the civilian population there, is an act of courage that not everyone would have the strength to undertake.

Baki Goxhaj has been one of the most prominent voices prominent in Albania during the last years. He has organized and participated in dozens of protests and sensitization activities, with the aim of raising the awareness of the Albanian public opinion about the humanitarian tragedy that the civilian population is experiencing in Gaza.

But also about other topics of public interest. And, really, I don’t think it really matters what political stance any of us might have on the Middle East. When it comes to hunger, suffering and the lives of innocent people, politics and personal beliefs must be silent in the face of what makes us human.

I believe that even the coldest hearts can never accept the killing of innocent civilians, much less their death by starvation. Precisely for this reason, Goxhaj’s decision to become the first Albanian to actively participate in a humanitarian mission to help the civilian population in Gaza, is an act that should make us all proud.

It takes incredible courage to walk with free will towards a known danger, at a time when the world is more used to counting victims than stopping tragedies. But, as often happens, every coin has two sides.

Bakiu who honors us is also Bakiu who shames us. Personally, I feel ashamed that I did not do enough to oppose what is happening in Gaza today. The only consolation is that I am not alone in this feeling of guilt.

There are many like me. But what worries me the most is that there are worse than us. There are those who have chosen not to see, because silence has become the most acceptable form of moral comfort in our times.

The government of my country has not only not raised its voice against the crimes that are happening there, but in many cases it has openly lined up in support of those who are committing a tragedy that the world is seeing directly.

The opposition has also chosen silence in the face of this reality, while certain individuals within it have expressed the same supportive stance as the government. At a time when every screen has become a witness of suffering, politics continues to behave as if the word “neutrality” can wash away the conscience.

However, the greatest shame falls on the Muslim community and on the majority of Khoxallars, who for almost three years have acted as if they do not see the drama of an entire people.

This shame became even more serious when, just a few days ago, one of their brothers in the nation and in the religion was killed. kidnapped in the middle of the sea, in international waters, and again they chose to remain silent. They are silent, perhaps because in dark times silence is often rewarded more than the truth.

The faith you preach is not just a series of empty rituals or an identity that is dressed up for the occasion. It is a call to stand against injustice, to stand up for the oppressed, to feed the hungry and not be silent in the face of evil.

But you, to your shame, have reduced it to mechanical movements, to rituals repeated every day, without any compassion, without any moral revolt and without any courage to say a word when people are massacred and starving.

For almost three years you have seen a people of the whole thing is destroyed and you have chosen to act as if this tragedy does not belong to you. Even when a brother of yours in nation and religion was kidnapped in the middle of the sea, in international waters, you were still silent. And your silence has become heavier than any words you could have said.

I pray that the Lord of the Universe will guide us, before we come before Him from whom nothing escapes. I pray that his mercy will be greater than his wrath and that he will see us with compassion, even though we chose not to. square
