Up to 45% of dementia cases can be prevented or delayed through a healthy lifestyle and simple preventative measures. This is the conclusion of the World Health Organization (WHO), which published new guidelines for reducing the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

According to the WHO, over 57 million people are currently living with dementia worldwide, while approximately 10 million new cases are registered each year. Alzheimer’s disease remains the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60–70% of all cases.

Although there is still no definitive cure for dementia, experts emphasize that many risk factors can be controlled, writes Ansa.

Smoking, excessive consumption, social isolation, lack of physical activity, air pollution, as well as diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol, are among them. the main factors that increase the risk.

The new guidelines recommend regular physical exercise, stimulating the brain with cognitive activities, participating in social activities, a healthy diet, quitting smoking, and reducing exposure to air pollution.

Also, it emphasizes the importance of treating cardiometabolic diseases and using hearing aids when they are necessary.

On the other hand, WHO does not recommend the use of vitamins B and E, omega-3 fatty acids, multivitamins or mineral supplements for the prevention of dementia, except in cases where their deficiency has been detected, reports ATSH.

According to the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, countries already have clear recommendations based on scientific evidence, which can be implemented immediately to protect the cognitive health of the population.
