The thermometer for measuring body temperature could very soon be the size of a small capsule that you swallow.

The latest invention by a group of MIT researchers makes this small technological device able to continuously monitor the temperature inside the gastrointestinal tract and transmit the data wirelessly.

The study published in the journal Nature Electronics describes this device, about 6 mm in diameter and 4 mm in height, designed for several task. Beyond measuring temperature, it will detect early the onset of infections, monitor patients under anesthesia, follow ovulation or prevent heat stroke in the elderly, athletes and soldiers.

In laboratory tests, the device has worked for 30 days in the body and then was eliminated through feces. According to the research team, very soon perhaps this technology will replace traditional thermometers.
