Iran’s top diplomat: Iran ready for peace deal on enrichment, rejects zero enrichment

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Abbas Araghchi, has stated that Tehran is ready to reach a “calming agreement” on uranium enrichment, stressing that zero enrichment is outside the scope of negotiations, reports Anadolu.

Speaking to the Al Jazeera channel, Araghchi said that the Iranian nuclear file can only be resolved through negotiations, stressing that Washington returned to talks after earlier resorting to actions military.

“Negotiations are the only way to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue,” Araghchi said, adding that talks with Washington constitute “a good start,” although “a long way remains to rebuild trust” between the two sides.

He stressed that Iran’s missile program is not and will not be subject to negotiations, describing it as a “defense issue.”

Araghchi said Iran is prepared to “build trust to develop realistic negotiations aimed at achieving a fair and profitable outcome for both sides”, reiterating Tehran’s readiness to reach an agreement that calms all parties regarding enrichment.

At the same time, he stressed that zero enrichment “is not on the negotiating table”, adding that enrichment is a “guaranteed right” for Iran and “must continue”.

“Even the bombings do not they managed to destroy our capabilities,” he said.

Speaking of regional security, Araghchi said that Iran does not target neighboring countries, but American military bases located in the region.

“We do not attack neighboring countries. We target American bases in the region, and there is a big difference between the two,” he said.

He added that, although Iran does not have the ability to strike American territory, if Washington attacks, it will responded by targeting American bases in the region.

Araghchi said the possibility of war “always exists,” stressing that Iran is prepared for such a scenario while continuing efforts to prevent it.

He said that although the negotiations with Washington took place indirectly, they still created the possibility of “a handshake” with the American delegation.

“There is no set date yet for the round.” second round of talks, but both Tehran and Washington believe it should take place soon,” he said.

As for enrichment levels, Araghchi said the level of enrichment depends on Iran’s needs, stressing that “enriched uranium will not leave the country”.

He added that talks with Washington were indirect and limited exclusively to the nuclear file.

Iran and the US resumed indirect nuclear diplomacy on Friday after weeks of heightened tensions, fueled by US President Donald Trump’s threat of military action against the country.

Earlier, Minister Araghchi described Friday’s talks as a “good start”, stressing that they could continue if the atmosphere of distrust is overcome. He said it was agreed that the process would continue and that the parties could meet again in Muscat at a later date.

Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said the talks were “very serious”, helping to clarify the positions of both sides and identify areas for possible progress.
